The international group Mark Cables FZE, based in the United Arab Emirates, is pleased to announce the construction of a 200 MW thermal power plant in Burkina Faso. This major milestone marks a turning point in strengthening Burkina Faso’s energy sovereignty and confirms the group’s ambition to become a key player in power infrastructure development across West Africa.
A “Fast Track” Model and Integrated Expertise
With a total estimated value of €180 million, the project is being developed by Mark Cables through its local platform. The development phase was completed in just six (6) months, a record timeframe made possible through close collaboration with Burkina Faso’s authorities.
“This project is a direct response to operational realities and the urgency of energy needs across the continent. It is a highly structuring project, made possible by innovative and agile financing mechanisms that enable a rapid transition from concept to execution,” said Mahmoud Nasr, CEO of Mark Cables.
Addressing Burkina Faso’s Energy Emergency
Burkina Faso is going through a decisive phase in its development, where access to reliable energy is a critical driver of industrial growth. By adding 200 MW of additional capacity, Mark Cables provides a concrete response to the country’s electricity deficit, directly supporting the efforts of the Government and SONABEL to stabilize the power grid and reduce dependence on energy imports.
Regional Integration: Membership in the WAPP in Lomé
A major institutional milestone was reached on January 24, 2026, during the General Assembly of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) held in Lomé, Togo. Mark Cables was officially admitted as a member, positioning the project at the heart of the regional energy ecosystem and facilitating cross-border electricity trade.
“We are proud to welcome Mark Cables among our members during this General Assembly. Their technical expertise and execution capacity will contribute significantly to energizing the sector and improving the regional energy market,” said Abdoulaye Dia, Secretary General of the WAPP, welcoming the company’s integration.
A Long-Term Commitment to Africa
The group stands out for its integrated solutions approach, covering the entire value chain—from power generation to transmission—with a growing openness to renewable energy. Through this 200 MW thermal power plant project in Burkina Faso, Mark Cables reaffirms its commitment to sustainable energy development. By relying on a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) financing model in this case, the group demonstrates its ability to deliver critical infrastructure while complying with international standards of reliability and efficiency.
