Power Grid Improvement: Around 68 Billion CFA for Phase 1 of the WAP Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire Interconnection Project

The planned electrical infrastructure includes a high-voltage cross-border transmission line equipped with remote-control systems and fiber-optic communication.

During the Council of Ministers meeting held on June 4, 2025, a decree was adopted to ratify a loan agreement worth approximately 68 billion CFA francs to finance Phase 1 of the WAP (West African Power Pool) Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire Interconnection Project, part of the regional West African electricity market program.

According to government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly, the project aims to increase electricity exchange between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, enhance the power grid, and support the operating budget of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) regional electricity trading system.

The project involves the construction of climate-resilient infrastructure between the Dunkwa II substation in Ghana’s Central Region and the Bingerville substation in the autonomous district of Abidjan.

The electrical infrastructure will notably include a high-voltage cross-border transmission line with remote-control equipment and fiber-optic transmission systems.
